COVER STORY: Debra Mears with WEICHERT, REALTORS® - The Executive Group* Posted 8/3/07
Setting new standards has been Debra Mears’ philosophy from day one in her 20-year career as a REALTOR®. Debra, a sales associate with WEICHERT, REALTORS® - The Executive Group, specializes in helping clients fulfill their dreams in the areas of new construction, residential relocation, and mortgage financing, as well as commercial real estate. As part of her approach to redefining real estate, Debra is committed to putting her clients first with professional and passionate service. "When you are buying or selling property, it’s important to have confidence in your real estate professional," Debra states. "I’m committed to customer service and I put my money where my mouth is. I am passionate about changing the way real estate transactions are handled. It is all about attention to detail and that detail is my client." Debra is licensed in Alabama, California, and Texas, and brings valuable assets to her clients. She has won numerous awards during local Parade of Homes for both home decorating and marketing. In addition, she is a certified Home Stager, an important skill in today’s aggressive selling market, and has extensive experience in mortgage banking to help clients get the best financing available. As she continues to move forward in setting new standards, Debra focuses on residential home sales and new construction, working with numerous custom homebuilders. Debra does not charge a buyer’s agent fee when working with her clients. "This service doesn’t cost anything when they take an agent with them when looking at a new construction home," Debra states. "By simply having the right representation, they could save thousands of dollars by having someone on their side with experience in the new construction market." Debra grew up in a military family and has lived all over the world. For the last 15 years, Debra has called Madison home and lives there with her two children, Kristine and D.J. "Wherever I’ve lived, I always come back to Madison," she reflects. "I love the city and its diversity of people." With a new office in Madison, Debra and WEICHERT, REALTORS® - The Executive Group are set to grow in the community. In March of 2006, when The Executive Group became a Weichert® franchised office, the company began achieving its goals by focusing on the needs, concerns, hopes, and dreams of its customers. "At Weichert®, it is a whole team approach," Debra says. "There are multiple agents, support staff, and all the best technology, which we use to give our clients a full range of services, such as solutions and advice on mortgages, insurance, details of moving, and an outstanding relocation team for corporate and residential moves." What has become a trademark of Weichert® is its two yellow balloons used during open houses. The company has built on that uniqueness by providing a weekly listing of open houses throughout North Alabama at www.2YellowBalloons.com. Debra, along with the team at WEICHERT, REALTORS® - The Executive Group, participates in many local organizations. She is a member of the Huntsville Board Association of REALTORS, City of Madison Chamber of Commerce, Huntsville-Madison County Chamber of Commerce, The Huntsville-Madison County Home Builders Association, and the National Association of Homebuilders. What sets Debra apart is her passion for her work, which contributes to her "setting new standards" in the real estate industry. Contact Info:
Although a name change was necessary, the attitude of Courtesy First Home Lenders (CFHL) was not. Owner Greg Balch says, "We want to treat everyone with the dignity and respect they deserve." The company switched from Courtesy Mortgage, Inc. to Courtesy First Home Lenders because of a competing company name in California and the need to trademark their own name. CFHL did not make any staff, ownership, or service changes and continues to offer politeness, honesty, and integrity to its customers. CFHL provides a variety of loans and programs to fit any need, such as 100% financing, Stated Income Programs, Jumbo Loans, and Interest Only Loans. CFHL can also help customers with past credit problems, first-time homebuyers are welcome, and there is no application fee. The staff of CFHL has more than 70 years of combined experience. Greg has 30 years in the "money business", with the last six exclusively in mortgages. Loan Consultants Kevin McAbee, Forrest Bedingfield, Keith Balch, Karen Hubbard, and Loan Processor Gayle Jackson each has expertise in specific areas of the mortgage and banking industries. What sets CFHL apart is not only an experienced staff, but also a connection with numerous lenders. This resource provides customers with multiple options. With the instability of today’s market, Courtesy First Home Lenders has continued to thrive and has successfully produced a high volume of loans this year. "We plan to be here for the long haul and our relationship with our lenders gives us an advantage," Greg states. "This is a challenging time in our industry, but it is also exciting because Courtesy First Home Lenders is equipped to take care of our clients’ needs. At Courtesy First Home Lenders, honesty, integrity, and courtesy are all in a day’s work." Contact Info:
Doing Business and Ministry…Here and Abroad Maria Binkley, President and Broker of EXIT Realty First, focuses on doing business and ministry here in North Alabama and around the world to assist families with real estate, financial, mortgage, and ministry needs. "It’s an extremely satisfying experience because my vision has always been to serve others," Binkley says. Binkley’s expertise in the industry started in 1989 when she obtained her Master Electrical License. Within a year, Maria started her own construction company, Binkley Electric & Construction, Inc., that still serves builders in the area. She followed this with a real estate salesperson’s license, which led to the broker’s license and the establishment of Binkley Real Estate & Financial Services, Inc. in 2001. In 2006, Maria established the EXIT franchise, which encompasses Madison County from Limestone County to New Market and north to Hazel Green. She chose to be a part of EXIT because of the tangible benefits, financial opportunities, and continued training and support for its REALTORS. Now with more than a dozen new agents since January and several more involved in the online real estate school, EXIT Realty First is continuing to grow by taking advantage of online opportunities, such as web-based technology for residential and commercial sellers and live video conferencing for agent training. "Also, a unique feature of my franchise is that I invite part-time agents to be a part of my EXIT family," Binkley states. Binkley, known locally as the "Hat Lady" because of her penchant for wearing a vast selection of hats from throughout the world, holds numerous certifications and licenses in the construction and real estate fields. She holds the Accredited Buyer Representation (ABR) designation, is a Certified Graduate Builder (CGB) with the National Association of Homebuilders, a residential mortgage broker, and a credit consultant. She is also the author of Unmasking the Truth about Credit Reports, which focuses on teaching parents and young people about having a good credit report and credit repair. Later this year, along with her partners, Binkley is launching NUCAP Mortgage of Alabama, Inc., a residential mortgage company designed to assist real estate agents and clients seeking financing for a home or business. Her plans are to expand this corporation into Georgia and Tennessee in the near future. What sets Binkley apart is her thirst for knowledge and her commitment to helping others. She is currently enrolled in classes to become a Certificated International Property Specialist (CIPS). This certification allows Binkley to extend her business and ministry around the globe. "There is a lot of new construction in Italy, especially near Sicily," Binkley comments. "Condominium complexes are continually being constructed along the sea, and this region is dear to me as I have family roots in southern Italy." Maria is also committed to giving back to both the local and the international community. Through her Grace & Power Ministries, Inc., a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that supports and helps people around the world, and as an active supporter of EXIT’s corporate charity, Habitat for Humanity, she personally donates time and money to assist others. Vilera Mills, Co-owner of First Impression Interiors, creates lasting impressions with exquisite and unique home decorating and design services for every room of your home. First Impression Interiors specialty is its custom-made window treatments, bedding, and pillows tailored to suit anyone’s taste. Since the age of 10, Vilera’s passion has been fabric. She provides clients with custom-made top window treatments, Roman shades or drapes, duvets, coverlets, bed skirts, euro pillows, and shams. In addition, she provides colorful children’s rooms and baby nursery bedding sets with adjustable dust ruffles. "I can take someone’s dream of a baby nursery and make it happen," Vilera says. One of the latest nursery sets Vilera created is for her niece, Hazel Day Robbins. The nursery is centered on a lavender and sage vintage bunny rabbit fabric that she used to make a complete bumper pad set, coverlet, and adjustable dust ruffle. Additional coordinates included a skirted table cover, new rocker cushions, and the window covering consisting of a roman shade with blackout lining and a boxed valance. For clients, Al and Susie Jones of Jones Valley, Vilera created custom-designed silk drapes using four different types of silk fabrics with a tasseled scarf, which hangs from large bronze rings on decorative pole rods. Then a custom bronze chenille bedspread was created with pencil pleated skirting out of bronze silk fabric with a fleur de lis embroidered pattern. The euro pillows, shams, throw pillows, and large bolster all coordinate with the bedspread and drapes. As an added touch, Vilera makes a complimentary monogrammed pillow to complete the bedding ensemble. The Jones’ bedroom ensemble was designed to compliment their bronze and gold faux finish walls painted by Katie Hesse of Hampton Cove. Vilera’s talent can also been seen in her clients’ kitchens. She has created Tuscany-themed kitchens with custom-made steel awnings. Her husband fabricates these awning frames and then Vilera custom fits fabrics to cover them. First Impression Interiors can change the look and aura of a kitchen with custom window treatments, new fabrics for bar stools and chairs, and coordinating rugs. First Impression Interiors works closely with clients on any sized budget and focuses on listening to the client and understanding their styles. The company can do as much or as little as needed and will work on one room at a time or the entire house. With her extensive knowledge of fabric, Vilera assists clients by selecting materials and can create window treatments and bedding from pictures or patterns. "Our goal is to always have a satisfied client and help them see their vision with window treatments, pillows, décor, and much more," she states. First Impression Interiors also offers color and fabric coordination, shopping for home accessories, and fluffing services. Co-owner Karen Singley specializes in interior decorating. She can rearrange existing furniture and suggests colors, floral arrangements, pictures, wall hangings, and many other accent pieces. Karen can also decorate or design outdoor areas, such as sunrooms, decks, and spa rooms that create a lasting impression. Contact Info:

Angel Food Ministries is a nonprofit, non-denominational organization that is dedicated to providing grocery relief to anyone and all communities across the United States. It was first established in 1994 by the Wingo family in Monroe, GA when they distributed food to 34 families. Angel Food Ministries is open to anyone that wants it. Once a month the host site, such as Cornerstone Word Of Life Church (CWOL) in Madison, distributes the units of food during a set time. For $25, people receive $60 worth of top-quality and name brand foods. Each month’s menu is different and consists of both fresh and frozen items, such as meats, cereals, eggs, and vegetables. In addition, there are specials that contain other foods and items at a very inexpensive price. Generally, one unit of food can feed a family of four for about one week or a single senior citizen for almost a month. There is no limit to the number of units or bonus foods an individual can purchase. Also, the host site accepts food stamps, cash, money orders, and checks made out to them. Co-coordinator Teresa Pollock has had the joy of seeing how God is working in the lives of the people who are buying the food and receiving prayer. "When Sherry S. came and picked up her units, she asked to pray that her husband would find a new job that pays better so they could move," Pollock states. "The very next month, she said she was amazed that the next week her husband got a new job paying more with better benefits, and she thanked God." Pollock continues, "Another woman, Leslie B. asked to pray for a major health concern she had and that after repeat testing, it came back negative." God is definitely on the move in the lives of the people getting Angel Food. Contact Info:
President Kathy Cribbs and the Madison Chamber of Commerce have made a difference for the city of Madison’s businesses. As her second term as president comes to a close, she can look back on many accomplishments. From the beginning, the Madison Chamber of Commerce was focused on small business. Kathy became involved in 1995 when it was known as the Madison Business Association. "It’s not political," Kathy says. "We’re the voice of our membership. We are able to give small businesses the personal one-on-one service they need." The Chamber provides many services to Madison businesses. Some of the things the Chamber offers include putting their business information in its relocation packages and welcome bags with no charge to the business. Also, there are educational and training programs that are offered. During Kathy’s term, she has overseen the Shop Madison First program. This community-wide effort gives Madison businesses a chance to get their names out to the public, while at the same time benefiting Madison. The tax dollars earned in Madison help improve the local infrastructure. "During the Shop Madison First event, a business can set up a booth and show what they do," Kathy states. "This event gets bigger every year." Kathy plans to serve next year as past president, and then to stay involved with the board and with Madison. "It’s a good feeling to know that you can help and you can make a difference," Kathy comments. "I love Madison, and I get that warm fuzzy feeling knowing I’m helping others." Kathy Cribbs, Vice President, Branch Manager, Worthington Federal Bank Brett Posey, President Elect of the Madison Chamber of Commerce: We are fortunate to live in…greatest city in Alabama! Brett Posey of Halsey Food Service became involved with the Madison Chamber of Commerce three years ago and has served as Treasurer and President Elect. Beginning in October 2007, Brett will become President. "I’m excited about having the opportunity to serve with the Chamber," Brett says. Brett believes the secret of the Chamber’s success is its communication with community leaders. "Our Chamber is fortunate to have City officials who see the need for our Chamber and its leaders’ investment in it," he states. "The support we receive from the City of Madison makes us stronger each year." In addition to continuing the relationship with City officials, Brett’s term will focus on working with neighboring Chambers of Commerce. "Working with Athens, Decatur, Huntsville, and Muscle Shoals can only benefit us all," Brett explains. Other areas of promotion include the Youth Council, Shop Madison First, and tourism. The Youth Council helps develop strong leadership skills for our future leaders. The Shop Madison First program promotes Madison’s economic development and supports growth by keeping tax dollars in the city. "It has been a very, very successful campaign for the city of Madison," Brett says. As Madison continues to grow, Brett will focus on growing the Chamber. "We want to develop a stronger Chamber through membership recruitment," Brett states. "We are a small-town Chamber, but we are fortunate to live in what I believe is the greatest city in Alabama." Brett Posey, Executive V.P./General Manager Madison Station Historical Society (NP)* Posted 8/27/07Memories of Madison: A Connected Community, 1857-2007 Madison Station Historical Society’s Historian John Rankin wrote the official sesquicentennial book for Madison. The book includes a variety of information about the background of the region and the town. It tells who built the historic houses, along with true tales and tidbits, plus photos to enlighten readers. "I wrote the book as if you were driving through town," Rankin says. "And on that drive you learn about people that lived there and how their lives connected to the world." The Historical Society’s president, Jeanne Steadman, approached Rankin for the book because he had already done extensive research on Madison. "I’m very appreciative of being able to write the book and make sure these people aren’t forgotten," he states. "These peoples’ lives all meant something. If they hadn’t come here, Madison wouldn’t be what it is today. It’s their lifeblood that converted this wildlife area into a community." After living in Mobile, AL, Texas, and California, Rankin moved to Madison. He acquired a passion for genealogy from his mother, who charted the Rankin family tree. After Rankin’s mother passed away, he continued her life’s ambition. With this love for genealogy, Rankin enjoyed the idea of writing Madison’s history in the book. "I didn’t write the book to become an author. I did it for the Society and the city," Rankin says. "All proceeds go back to the city and the Historical Society for public projects. Madison is impressive today—and it was back then." Other gifts include a portion of the YMCA site, which was partially donated by Enfinger Steele Development. The project has been going strong since 2004. That’s when the association conducted a market study, in which the community expressed an overwhelming need for a YMCA. The YMCA hopes to break ground this fall. This project will definitely improve the quality of life for this community." The YMCA, a Christian-based nonprofit organization, welcomes people of all faiths, backgrounds, and abilities. (NP)* Posted 9/19/07Helping Many People Throughout the World "As trying as our days may become at times, memories of true struggles of the families who do not live in this awesome nation are humbling," Grace and Power Ministries Inc. Founder Maria Binkley states. "For many people around the world, theirs is a quest for survival while we address many issues that are not life and death and would seem trivial to them. The focus of my ministry is to help as many people as we can." Binkley’s ministry now has 39 churches in India, and this summer opened its first Bible College there. The ministry’s goal is to put at least 50 pastors a year through training and, while they are undergoing training, also support their families. After the training is complete, these pastors and their families will be sent into a village to pastor with monthly support and a bicycle. The bicycle is of dire importance because the pastor will ride to other villages to establish churches and care for families. In addition, Grace and Power Ministries has a pastor in Italy who oversees five churches in different communities throughout the southern Province. Binkley also supports a ministry in Ireland and plans to hold events in Asia in hopes of a ministry in Indonesia. "Our heart is as His…for the nations!" she exclaims. The work that Power and Grace Ministries provides is supported through donations. For example, a $20 donation for Binkley’s book, Unmasking the Truth About Credit Reports, goes directly to this ministry. This book teaches children and adults about the importance of credit and debt, credit reports, and how to repair them, and much more. Binkley exclaims, "Thank you for your support of our ministry! Our prayer for you is from III John 2:XX. Also, God bless America, our troops and their families, and our leaders." Contact and Donation Info:

For 70 years, the Javits-Wagner-O’Day Act (JWOD) has enabled agencies of the National Industries for the Blind (NIB) to provide employment opportunities for people who are blind through delivery of products and services to the federal government. The program has recently changed its name to AbilityOne, but the mission remains the same. In the 1990s base supply stores were closed due to realignment. NIB saw the opportunity to create retail jobs for people who are blind and approached the federal government. Today, NIB and its associated agencies operate 126 base supply centers and supply federal markets with a selection of more that 3,000 quality products and services under the trade name SKILCRAFT, manufactured and provided by people who are blind. Alabama Industries for the Blind (AIB) is one of the country’s largest employers of persons who are blind. AIB employs 310 people of whom 75 percent are blind or visually impaired. They operate base supply centers at Redstone Arsenal, Moody Air Force Base, Fort Rucker, and will soon open a store at Maxwell Air Force Base. AIB has operated the Redstone Base Supply Center since 1997. Five of the eleven employees at the Redstone store are visually impaired, however, with adaptive technology and their strong focus on customer satisfaction…you might never notice it!
